Manchester United appear to be closing in on appointing Erik ten Hag as their next manager.
MEN Sport understands that United have settled on Ten Hag rather than Mauricio Pochettino as their ideal candidate to take over the reins from Ralf Rangnick in the summer. He has already been interviewed for the role and Ajax expect the 52-year-old to make the switch.
The Athletic reported on Tuesday night that United have reached a verbal agreement with Ten Hag to be their next manager on a four-year contract. A deal still needs to be agreed with Ajax, though there aren't expected to be any stumbling blocks.
Meanwhile, United will today continue their preparations for their next Premier League fixture against Norwich City on Saturday. Anything short of a win would be another terrible blow to their quickly fading Champions League hopes.
Stay tuned for all the day's United news.

Ferdinand warns Ten Hag of 10-year problem at United
Rio Ferdinand has warned Erik ten Hag of the 10-year problem he needs to fix at Manchester United should he be appointed manager.
United’s business in the transfer market over the past few years has been heavily criticised, with the Reds finding themselves sliding further down the table despite spending more than their rivals.
I'm not talking just the last couple of windows, I'm talking eight to 10 years since Sir Alex Ferguson left, it hasn't been good enough. So that needs to improve drastically, get the right players in.
Not necessarily world superstars, but get the right characters and personalities to come in and help drive the culture that is going to allow us to challenge for a sustainable amount of time – not just a here today, gone tomorrow concept. That's vitally important.
The next window that's coming, if it's Ten Hag, I want to see what type of player he is going to be bringing in because it's very different to be recruiting a player for Ajax than it is for someone like Man United. The expectations, the pressure, have they got the right character, the right minerals to handle the demands at Man United.

Rice and Kane would make United 'title contenders'
Signing Declan Rice and Harry Kane would make Manchester United title contenders once again, according to former Premier League footballer Carlton Palmer.
The pair have been linked with moves to Old Trafford ahead of the summer. United are likely to prioritise a new striker and midfielder in the transfer window, although both Rice and Kane will likely come at a hefty price.
When asked by GiveMeSportwhether the duo would fire the club back up into title contention, Palmer said: “Of course, they’ve got to be title contenders. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Kalvin Phillips told he would 'ruin relationship' with Leeds fans if he joined Manchester United
Kalvin Phillips has been told he would 'ruin his relationship' with Leeds fans if he decided to sign for Manchester United.
MEN Sport revealed that United are working hard to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford for next season. United have outlined a defensive midfielder as their number one target for the summer transfer window.
With Phillips currently playing for one of United's fiercest rivals and having grown up a Leeds supporter, there are some concerns about whether the club would be able to persuade him to move from Elland Road to Old Trafford. However, should he choose to do just that, he would not be the first and likely wouldn't be the last.

Roy Keane's prediction after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacking has come true at Manchester United
Manchester United's Champions League qualification for next season took yet another blow on Saturday after being beaten 1-0 by Everton.
Toffees winger Anthony Gordon netted the only goal of the game, as his deflected effort found a way past David de Gea to seal a vital three points in their quest to avoid relegation. Frank Lampard's side showed far more hunger, desire and willingness to scoop maximum points, leaving United to reflect on another dismal performance.
That defeat on Merseyside means that United have now won just one of their last seven games in all competitions. Five of those have been in the Premier League — meaning that their top-four hopes now hang by a thread.

OPINION - Manchester United might make a surprise Donny van de Beek decision this summer
Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek were the young and talented faces that inspired Ajax to an unlikely and remarkable Champions League run in the 2018/19 season, with Ajax making it to the semi-finals.
The Dutch side were only denied the chance of playing in the final by Lucas Moura's late dramatic goal at the Amsterdam Arena. Tottenham executed the unthinkable that night, defying the odds to progress. Ajax were just minutes away from making the 2019 Champions League final and they probably deserved to do so. They captured the continent's imaginations once again that season.
It was inevitable that team would be dismantled soon after that defeat. Ajax's best-kept secrets were now on the international stage and the aforementioned players eventually joined Juventus, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

OPINION - Erik ten Hag appointment will put two Manchester United careers on the line
The winds of change are about to blow through Old Trafford, but there are more than a few careers on the pitch on the line with the appointment of Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman will become the fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson when he takes over from interim Ralf Rangnick this summer and he will be in no doubt just how much has to change to get this club back on track.
Ten Hag is the crowd-pleasing appointment, the overwhelming favourite amongst United fans, but his reputation has been almost entirely forged in the shadows of the mainstream.

OPINION: Luka Modric is a reminder Manchester United's problems date back to Sir Alex Ferguson
As if it is not galling enough for Manchester United supporters to watch Champions League football from their armchairs, the ensemble cast of the quarter-finals is a who's who of talent that has got away from the club.
Robert Lewandowski, now eliminated with Bayern Munich, was on Sir Alex Ferguson's radar in 2012, David Moyes passed on Thiago Alcantara, who went on to sign for Pep Guardiola and then Jurgen Klopp. Moyes also met Toni Kroos's agent, Jose Mourinho shortlisted Ruben Dias and coveted the Atletico Madrid enforcer Jose Gimenez.
The two to truly rue are Karim Benzema and Luka Modric. Modric's tie-salvaging assist for Rodrygo against Chelsea was the zenith of assist-trumps-goal for the season and Benzema's fourth goal in two games against the holders edged an absorbing spectacle.

Rio Ferdinand reveals Sir Alex Ferguson's big transfer regret at Manchester United
Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand has detailed how he believes Sir Alex Ferguson always regretted not being able to bring Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to Manchester United.
Ferdinand made the admission after Benzema netted his 12th Champions League goal of the season in Madrid's 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in the second-leg of quarter-final showdown on Tuesday. Despite being beaten on the night, Benzema's goal in the first-half of extra-time ensured Madrid won the tie 5-4 on aggregate, booking their place in the semi-finals.
The Frenchman netted a hat-trick in the first-leg at Stamford Bridge last week, meaning that he has now scored seven goals in his last three Champions League outings. Despite recently turning 34, he has been outstanding for Madrid this season, notching 38 goals in 38 appearances.

OPINION: Ten Hag should have chance to make Hannibal decision
Hannibal Mejbri has become accustomed to the despair that can creep into the Manchester United dugout during his exposure to the first team this season.
The 19-year-old was among the substitutes for the fifth time this season at Goodison Park on Saturday and United have won none of those games. Still the teenager waits for his first senior involvement of this wretched campaign.
It was in February that Ralf Rangnick confirmed Hannibal was now a permanent member of the first-team group at Carrington — but so are Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata and they hardly get a look-in either. The decision to allow Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial leave in January, as well as recent injuries, opened the door to Hannibal making matchday squads, but not to involvement on the pitch. That has to change soon.

United reveal future plan for Garnacho
For the 2,000 or so fans in the Sir Alex Ferguson stand on Friday night, there was one player in particular they had come to see.
Those supporters inside Old Trafford for the U23's 1-0 win over their Chelsea counterparts got what they wanted, especially in the second half, when Garnacho played on the wing right in front of them.
The 17-year-old is probably the highlight of a miserable season for the club, despite him not yet making a matchday squad with the first-team. He's possibly the most popular player at Old Trafford at the moment and the buzz every time he set off on a run on Friday showed the anticipation that is following.

OPINION: Glazers must listen to Neville's five-point plan
It's almost the first anniversary of Manchester United's match against Liverpool at Old Trafford being postponed.
That was the first time a Premier League match had been postponed because of fan protests. The European Super League proposal, the fuel that fanned the flames, was an assault on football. The plan was sickening, despicable and backed by the Glazers. Thousands of supporters had been pushed over the edge and they wanted their voices to be heard. The anti-Glazer chants were heard loud and clear that day.
United were forced to stay in The Lowry Hotel as supporters sang “we decide, we decide, we decide when you can play." The team buses remained empty and Old Trafford was besieged just down the road, with supporters breaking onto the pitch.
